What is animal-assisted therapy and how can it help?
Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is an adjunct to more traditional therapies that involves intentionally incorporating therapy animals into sessions to help achieve specific goals. Among many things, this modality can help people:
-
Learn about healthy relationships and trust
-
Learn about respect, patience, and empathy
-
Develop an understanding of appropriate touch and how to set boundaries
-
Learn how to regulate emotions
-
Build self-esteem, confidence, and a sense of empowerment
-
Understand the impact of our behaviour
